San Francisco, Calif. — Design Chain Associates LLC now offers an English translation of Korea's environmental legislation called the Act Concerning the Resource Recycling of Electrical/Electronic Products and Automobiles, also known as Korea RoHS.
Korea's National Assembly passed the Act Concerning the Resource Recycling of Electrical/Electronic Products and Automobiles on April 2, 2007. This wide-reaching regulation has elements of the European Union's RoHS, WEEE, and ELV (End of Life Vehicles) directives but is also uniquely Korean, said Design Chain Associates. The regulation goes into force on January 1, 2008.
The Act of April 2, 2007 remains virtually the same as the proposed Act of December 27, 2006 but there are several minor changes including those in the following articles: Article 8, Section 1; Article 9; Article 10, Section 2 and Section 4; Article 20, Section 3; Article 22, Section 1; and Article 45, Section 1.
While this is the final legislation, it is not the final regulation, said Design Chain Associates. Like both EU's RoHS Directive and China's Administration on the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products (China RoHS), this regulation leaves out all the important details such as detailed scope (certain classes of automobiles, and electronics initially equivalent to that of the pre-existing Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources), substance restrictions and concentration limits, and design for environment requirements, said the company. These will all be defined by Presidential Decrees and Ordinances from the Korea Ministry of the Environment.
