Espoo, Finland Nokia says it has launched the first mobile phones to include alerts encouraging people to unplug the charger once the battery is full. Nokia estimates this move could save enough electricity to power 85,000 homes a year.
Starting with the new Nokia 1200, Nokia 1208 and the Nokia 1650, the energy-saving alerts will be rolled out across the Nokia product range. The alerts are one of a series of environmental initiatives that mobile manufacturers, led by Nokia, agreed to take action on this year.
According to Nokia, about two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it's unplugged after charging. The company made the decision to put the alerts into mass markets products first to help maximize the potential energy savings. The Nokia 1200, Nokia 1208, Nokia 1650 are targeting high volumes of sales in fast growing markets such as India, China and Latin America.
Another recent environmental milestone for Nokia includes the Energy Star certification of its newest range of chargers by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the US. for their energy efficiency. The chargers, in use since 2005, exceed the EPA standards by using 50- 70% less energy than the Energy Star requirement, and also meet the highest European Union standards, said Nokia.
Nokia plans to further decrease the energy consumption of its chargers. By 2010 it targets a 50% reduction in the amount of electricity a charger consumes while still plugged into the mains, but not the phone. Click the link for more information about Nokia's environmental business practices.
