Irvine, Calif. — Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD), and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., have developed mercury-free 10.4- and 10.6-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) panels for notebook PCs. These displays use a LED (light emitting diode) backlighting system to provide low-profile, light weight, and low-power consumption features.

TMD now offers a range of seven LED-backlit LCD products for notebook applications, that use a proprietary low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology, with screen sizes ranging from 8.9- to 13.3 inches and pixel resolutions of XGA, WXGA, and WXGA+. They feature lower operating voltages, and are mercury-free and RoHS compliant.

In addition to the adoption of a LED-backlight system for these notebook PC panels, TMD has also adopted thinner glass substrates of 0.3 mm or less, reduced the number of component parts, and optimized layout design for weight reduction.

For example, TMD has decreased the weights to 120 g for a 10.4-inch XGA module and 135 g for a 12.1-inch XGA module. These improvements have helped to reduce overall module thickness to only 2.5 mm for several of TMD's notebook PC LCD products. TMD has also achieved a high brightness of level up to 300 candelas per sq. meter (cd/m2) for specific products in this family.

LED-backlit LCD modules include the following:

  • 26 cm (10.4-inch), 1024 x 768 / XGA, 120 g, 240 cd/m2, 2.4 W
  • 31 cm (12.1-inch), 1024 x 768 / XGA, 135 g, 300 cd/m2, 3.1 W
  • 23 cm (8.9-inch), 1280 x 768 / WXGA, 130 g, 200 cd/m2, 2.9 W
  • 27 cm (10.6-inch), 1280 x 768 / WXGA, 150 g, 300 cd/m2, 2.8 W
  • 28 cm (11.1-inch), 1366 x 768 / WXGA+, 146 g, 240 cd/m2, 3.7 W
  • 31 cm (12.1-inch), 1280 x 800 / WXGA, 183 g, 300 cd/m2, 3.5 W
  • 34 cm (13.3-inch), 1280 x 800 / WXGA, 225 g, 300 cd/m2, 4.0 W

Pricing: $350 each for both models in sample quantities.
