Automotive thin-film chip resistor delivers high temperature, high rated power

Courtesy of eeProductCenter

Malvern, Pa. — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has claimed the industry's first professional automotive thin-film chip resistor in a 0603 case size with a high operating temperature up to +175° C (1000 hours) and an advanced level of rated power. Vishay's professional devices are defined as those with 1% or .5% tolerance and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 50 ppm or 25 ppm.

Featuring an absolute TCR down to ±25 ppm/K with a 0.5% tolerance, the MCT 0603 AT resistor offers resistance values from 100Ω to 100 kΩ and a 75-V operating voltage. While most thin-film chip resistors offer power ratings to 100 mW at +70°C ambient temperature, the power rating of the MCT 0603 AT is specified to 150 mW at +85°C. The device's 0.85 x 1.55-mm package with low 0.45-mm profile enables the design of high-density circuits.

With an excellent moisture resistivity specified to <0.5% (+85°C; 85% RH; 1000 hours) and 1000-V ESD capability, the device is optimized to provide high reliability in harsh environments. In addition to AEC-Q200 compliance, CECC approval ensures the MCT 0603 AT meets a set of demanding short-term and long-term performance requirements as defined by EN 140401-801. Compliance with these requirements is verified through periodic audits by the VDE Testing and Certification Institute.

The resistor delivers stable performance for automotive electronics including engine control units, gearbox controls, body electronics, and safety, power supply, and braking systems. Other applications include industrial electronics such as energy management, measurement, sensors, scales, and precision amplifiers; telecommunication base stations; and medical equipment.

The resistor is RoHS compliant and compatible with lead (Pb)-free and tin/lead (Sn/Pb) reflow and vapor-phase soldering processes. It also complies with the GADSL and the CEFIC-EECA-EICTA list of legal restrictions on hazardous substances. This includes full compliance with the EU's End of Vehicle life (ELV), RoHS and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) directives.

Vishay plans to extend the MC AT series to 0805 and 1206 case sizes in 2008 and introduce a precision version.

Pricing: For U.S. delivery varies by quantity and specifications, and is typically priced at $30.00/1000 pieces.
Availability: Samples and production quantities are available now, with lead times of five to six weeks for larger orders.
