Association Resources & Initiatives
The WEEE Forum, an association of collective WEEE take back systems in Europe, provides guidance on European collective take-back systems.
For information on how Canada is addressing the recycling issue with the electronics and IT industries, please visit the Electronics Product Stewardship Canada (EPSC) site at www.epsc.ca. The organization has also developed guidelines for Recycling Vendor Selection and Qualification.
For more information on how the high tech industry and member companies of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) are proactively addressing environmental concerns, check out its Policy Priorities web page. Click here for details.
Be sure to visit EIA’s web site (www.eia.org) periodically for meeting updates on environmental issues. Another EIA resource is the Environment Consumer Education Initiative (www.eiae.org), which educates consumers on the importance of electronics reuse and recycling.
Click here for information on IEEE’s Green Electronics, Manufacturing, and Packaging technical committee. This committee deals with environmental issues associated with the manufacture and packaging of electronics. A good source of linking information is the IEEE Components, Packaging, & Manufacturing Technology Society (CPMT) web site (www.cpmt.org.)
Another manufacturing association actively involved in sorting out technical issues around lead-free soldering and processes is the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) (www.nemi.org). Click here for information on NEMI’s Tin Whisker Activities. Here you’ll find technical information on Tin whisker testing, modeling and related projects on lead-free assembly and rework. This includes a link to acceptance test requirements and recommendations on lead-free finishes.
iNEMI also provides valuable presentations on the transition to RoHS compliant products. Click here for NEMI RoHS Transition Projects presentations, Apex 2004 and here for iNEMI RoHS/Pb-Free summit presentations.
Here’s a link to the IPC (Association Connecting Electronics Industries) lead-free web site (http://leadfree.ipc.org). This site provides valuable information on IPC’s efforts to help the electronic interconnect industry to meet global regulations and legislation.
The National Electronic Distributors Association (NEDA) is another key resource from industry players on the economic and logistics challenges of RoHS/lead-free compliance. Click here for lead-free presentations.
Don't forget to periodically check in with The Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) (www.smta.org) for conferences and events targeting RoHS compliance. Topics include troubleshooting lead-free SMT assembly processes.
